The GIF is the acronym for Graphics Interchange Format. It is like the PNG that also has lossless data compression. It has been popularly and widely used on the internet for its portability and for the wide support for it. It was one of the first two formats used for graphics in websites.
Other formats
There are other formats being used for computer graphics but have not become as popular like the ones mentioned above. One is the MNG which is supposed to be an extension of PNG for multiple images that can be used for animation.
One format that is currently being developed is the SVG which stands for Scalable Vector Graphics. This format is intended to be used for web graphics and animation.
